Hermione Pepper
Identity, Packaging
October 2012 saw the release of Hermione Pepper's self-titled debut solo album. We were tasked with bringing the design to life, creating all elements of the CD packaging and insert booklet.
Hermione’s brief was straightforward and specific; she had a strong idea of the tone of voice she was looking for. In terms of genre she wanted to draw on Goth and folk styling, and gave examples of CD covers where she liked the clarity of font, simplicity and tonal quality of the imagery. Above all, the visuals and typography had to reflect the quality and atmosphere of her music. Hermione Pepper's songs are vivid storytelling; and include a ghost story, a tale of a gallows tree, a murder, and a mythological creature called a Selkie.
We used a distinctive and quirky font called Yellow Magician for the main identity logotype. We wanted a way of writing the name that could embody the style and evocative nature of the music. This font uses an interesting mix of sans and serif characteristics, perfect for this project. Helvetica was used as a support font. The colour palette of deep blues, black and grey took their cue from the moody, atmospheric photography which forms the centrepiece of the CD cover.
